Important Refrigerator Care Tips

  • Every so often to prevent damaging the fridge door seal, with a damp cloth wipe it and the cabinet surface that it touches when refrigerator door is closed with a damp cloth. Often inadvertent spilled sweet sticky beverages such as soda and juice will accumulate especially at the bottom opening, (so special attention should be paid to the bottom portion). Failure to do so can eventually cause the seal to rip and tear allowing warm air and moisture to enter which can cause the refrigerator’s insulation to become wet and less effective, add to energy expenses and not to mention causing an expensive seal replacement job.
  • Although your refrigerator door is designed to hold containers of all sizes, maxing it out with many full sized beverage bottles will eventually take its toll on the door hinges, plastic inner door liner and the door shelves themselves. If unchecked it could affect the doors ability to close properly, causing air leaks and an expensive repair. Whenever practical to extend the life of the door, the larger 1 and 2 liter bottles should be placed in the inside the refrigerator itself.
  • The refrigerator condenser coils function is to remove heat, creating refrigeration but it is very susceptible to accumulating dust and lint from the air, if left unchecked it can reduce your refrigerator’s ability to refrigerate, shorten the life of the compressor and make it run long raising the electric bill. It needs to be vacuumed once or twice a year. It is usually is located in the front at floor level behind the removable grill kick plate. If not, (except on Sub-Zero where it is usually on the top with the compressor condensing unit), it should be in the back. (the vacuum cleaner crevice tool will come in handy).
  • Your refrigerator’s door swing is determined by it’s leveling position. If tilted backwards the door will “want” to swing closed when open; if it sits level on the floor and the fridge door will stay in place, tilt it forward and it will tend to swing open which will make it difficult to close if your hands are already occupied as well as the risk that careless closing may end up causing the door to wind up in the open position for an extended period. What to do?
Most fridges are equipped with leveling screws feet located under both front corners that will raise and lower the refrigerator with the use of an open ended wrench, adjustable wrench, or pliers. Turning the feet clockwise will lower the front of the fridge while counter clockwise will raise it. Either the level stay in place position or the automatic closing option are a matter of personal choice – but now you know how to control it!

Ten Basic Appliance Maintenance Tips

(Extend your Appliance’s life while avoiding future problems)

1. Replace the refrigerator’s water in the door and ice maker water filter

Replace it every 3 to 6 months depending on its usage. Once the filter is no longer effective do to its media being filled to capacity, its toxic contents could start to release into your glass or ice cubes. Merely tuning it a quarter turn counterclockwise will release it and a quarter turn clockwise to reinstall.

2. Clean your refrigerator’s condenser coil

1 or 2 times a year depending on the conditions, clean out debris such as dust, lint pet hair etc that can restrict or even block air flow to the condenser which in turn will cause over heating, driving up your electric bills, over working the compressor and shorten it’s life causing a very expensive repair. Using a good strong vacuum with a crevice tool is a good approach. The condenser coil is most often located behind the grill-kick plate in the front or if not in the back of the refrigerator behind the repair maintenance access panel.

3. Inspect washer hoses

Replace them if you notice cracks, small leaks and deformities or if your washing machine is over 5 years or it’s been 5 years or more since you’ve last replaced them, (they should be replaced every 5 years). Leaking hoses are the most common cause for washer leaks. They are attached to the back of the washer, running to the hot and cold water supply.

4. Clean out clothes dryer exhaust vent

The obvious benefit in keeping the dryer vent clean is to save on energy but also it can be a fire hazard if not maintained. It is done by first loosening the clamp screw or bolt that holds the vent hose on to the dryer and reaching down to remove as mush of the large clumps by hand as possible. Then with a wire coat hanger or wire fashioned into a scraping or grabbing tool scrap out the inside of the hose vent as far as you can reach. Finish off the cleaning with a good strong vacuum. When done cleaning be sure to securely reconnect the vent hose to the dryer so it won’t fall off during dryer operation.

5. Fix rusty dishwasher rack tines

Rusty dishwasher rack tines can ruin dishes and silverware. There is a tine repair kit available to easily remedy the problem. Basically it’s a matter of sniping off the rusty vinyl coated tines with a tin snips or wire cutter then sealing the bare ends with the paint, (that comes with the kit), inserting the new tine ends on the rack and resealing again with the vinyl paint. A 24 hour wait is required before using the dishwasher again.

6. Check oven door for secure fit and seal

More than 20% of the ovens heat can be lost do to a poor seal causing long cooking times and wasteful energy loss. Check the seals condition by opening the oven door and visually checking the fiberglass or rubber oven door seal by noting if there are any breaks, tares or deformities. You might want to try closing the door on a dollar bill to see if it holds or drops through. If the seal fails these basic tests it should be replaced.

7. Clean or replace dirty range hood or down draft vent filters

Replace range hood and down draft charcoal filters that are two years old or visibly soiled. Metal mesh and plastic filters should be washed by hand in mild soapy water or run through your dishwasher.

8. Clean stove top drip pans

Remove drip pans or bowls from under the stove’s gas burners or electric elements and pre-soak them in a detergent solution for at least 5 minutes before hand washing and putting them back in place. If spills have really burned into the range drip pans they will have to be replaced. Generic stove drip pans can usually be matched when brought into a parts counter if the exact manufactures part is no longer available.

9. Clean and deodorize garbage disposal

With the garbage disposal off, look down inside of it to see if there are large items stuck in it that may have become lodged in there. (It is advisable to use tongs or a tool instead of your hands to remove them). After removing the obstructions pour a mixture of ice cubes and vinegar into the garbage disposal and then run cold water through it. To remove odor throw in a handful of lemon or orange peels and run cold water through it.

10. Clean or replace your air conditioner filter

Vacuum plastic or aluminum mesh filters removing as much dirt as possible by running hot water through them. Disposable ones such as fiberglass should be replaced, just bring in the old one to a appliance parts vendor or a hardware/ building supply center that will have universal filters that come in larger sheets.

  • Sort laundry in groups before placing in your washing machine: coloreds, whites, synthetics, delicates, and woolens.
  • Wash all lingerie separately.

Loading

  • Although it may seem that a fully loaded washer saves time and energy, it will also cause inefficient washing by not allowing clothes to properly swish around as they would if they were loosely dropped into the washer
tube which will greatly enhancing washing ability.
  • Avoid placing large items such as towels, house coat etc. on one side with only light items such as underwear on the other side to prevent a tube imbalance in your washer.
  • By loading the clothes evenly together, cleaning is enhanced By evenly mixing large and small items together in the washer cleaning is enhanced.

  • Load synthetics just half way or less and delicates and woolens 1/3 tub in your washing machine.

Special Care Items

  • Flame retardant sleepwear: Do not place in your washer with detergent, doing so will suppress it’s flame retardant ability.
  • Woolen garments should only be soaked in detergent water for 10 to 15 minutes before the normal rinse cycle.
  • Plastic items such as vinyl backed garments, bibs, pants, etc only have to be washed in your washing machine for no longer than four minutes before being tumbled dried in a no heat dryer

Rinsing

  • Rinse only in cold water, this helps to prevent clothes from wrinkling.

Cold Water Washing

Helpful Laundry Dryer Tips

Preparation

  • Clean the dryer lint trap before each use.
  • Depending on load size, place one to three dry towels in the dryer load to absorb moisture and speed up drying time.
  • By shaking out clothes as they are removed from washer and placed in the clothes dryer, drying time and wrinkles will be reduced.
  • A high washer spin or doubling spinning before placing the clothing in your dryer will reduce drying time and energy with a net savings far exceeding the extra washer use.

Sorting

  • Avoid placing towels in the dryer with permanent press.
  • Try to dry like weight clothing with similar light weight items and likewise thick towels and other heavy things should be placed with similar heavy things.

Loading

  • Avoid putting wet items in a partially finished load, drying them separately instead would be a better choice.
  • Larger loads dry more economically but if the load is to large the advantage will reverse and also create lint. The rule of thumb should be, whatever we fit comfortably in your dryer will work best in the long run.

Drying Tips

  • Remove blankets from the clothes dryer before completely dry, then spreading them out over a bed or flat surface.
  • Woolen items should only be dried for 10 or 15 minutes at the most and removed while they are still slightly damp, before very warm, and then hang up to thoroughly dry.
  • Unload your dryer while clothes are slightly damp, especially if they are going to be hung up immediately.
  • To Avoid wrinkling, hang or fold all clothes immediately after drying.
  • If garments are wrinkled do to being over dried, toss a damp towel into the dryer until the wrinkles are gone.
  • Try to dry clothes only a long as needed to dry them, drying beyond that point eventually will set wrinkles, cause shrinkage, increase static and shorten their life.

Economy and Efficiency Measures

  • By disconnecting the dryer vent hose the dryer can serve as a supplemental heat source source in winter.
  • Every week or two inspect the outside dryer vent to be sure that when the dryer is off the automatic flapper closes, if not replace the flapper-hood assembly to prevent unnecessary heat loss while the dryer is not running.
  • Place your Dryer in a heated or at least insulated space so that it will not need to make as much energy on its own.
  • Clean dryer lint screen or trap before each use to increase efficiency and reduce lint.

Refrigerator Questions Commonly Asked

Q: I have an older refrigerator, what setting should the temperature be set at?

A: Unless your Fridge is equipped with the newer type of thermostat that shows and operates on actual temperature with Fahrenheit settings, the numbers on the dial will be only relative, so there is no set rule as to a best setting; It is just a matter trial and error till you’ve achieved a suitable temperature according to your personnel preference, noting the reading on the thermometer and adjusting the dial setting as needed using the thermometer as your guide.

Q: What is the proper temperature for my refrigerator and freezer?

The temperature range for a refrigerator is between 34° F and 40° F but one must be careful of the lower end of the range because of possible variations within the refrigerator combined with the possibility of inaccuracies in the temperature gauge; if miscalculated just a bit to warm some items may freeze causing damage. The range for the freezer is usually between 0 and 5° F but a bit colder won’t harm food but perhaps your pocket book.

Q: How long should the Fridge run before it turns itself off?

A: It depends on the refrigerator heat load rather a time interval. Some of the factors are how often the door is opened and for long, the temperature in the kitchen, the amount, frequency and temperature of food product placed in the refrigerator, what the fridge thermostat is set at, to name a few. In short it is based on a variable cooling demand not timing.

Q: My refrigerator has a foul odor, could it be the Freon?

A: If it were the Freon your refrigerator would not be cooling, but more to the point, Freon has no odor so it can not be.

Q: I have a chemical odor coming from my refrigerator, if not the Freon gas, what could it be?

A: A refrigerator has no chemicals or anything chemical to smell that way, far more likely though it will be a discarded food item hiding somewhere inside. Decomposing foods will often emit chemical smelling scents.

Q: After a refrigerator was repaired, how long should it take till it regains its former normal temperature?

A: It varies depending on a number of factors but the short answer is between 12 and 36 hours. The length of time the refrigerator or freezer door was left open while being worked on, the quantity of food in the refrigerator and how much it warmed up all add up to create a heat load that will take a while to over come. If after 48 hours it did not “catch up”, at that point it would be acceptable to re-contact the service firm.

Q: Is it OK to refreeze or once thawed must the food be cooked and eaten?

A: If the food has not completely thawed or some ice still remains on it should be safe to refreeze it, however, what ever condition it was in before it thawed does add to the “clock”. Another words, if the food product was close to being tossed when frozen, there won’t be much remaining shelf life to go if refreezing it.

Dishwasher Tips

  • Pre-rinse your dishes if they are going to sit all day before you place the in your dishwasher, if not the case then scraping alone should be adequate.
  • Don’t over crowd your dishwasher. Avoid layering just one last item instead of hand washing, it could cause you to re-wash the entire load all over again.

  • Do not stack the dishes, the spray water will not be able to clean the top dish in your dishwasher
  • Be careful of items with long handles in your dishwasher, they could slip through the rack stopping the spray arm rotation.
  • Separate spoons in the silverware basket in your dishwasher by turning every other one upside down.
  • Place mugs and glasses between the tines only, placing them on top can cause water spotting.
  • Be very careful when arranging wine glasses by avoiding their bumping into each other or striking the top of the dishwasher.
  • Properly secure plastics to prevent their falling into the dishwasher heating element.
  • Load dishes and boles with the soiled side down in the dishwasher. Casseroles, pots, and pans should angle down for optimum cleaning.
  • Place platters pots and pans along the side and back of the rack, but never in the front or the detergent will not reach the dishes. If possible to create extra space, move the silverware basket to the center of your dishwasher to create more space in the sides.
  • Separate your silver and silver plated from stainless in your dishwasher to avoid pitting the silver should they touch.
  • Angle the cups as much as possible to prevent their bases from pooling water. If puddles still occur load the cups on to the bottom rack first to avoid drip down from the top.
  • Use only fresh detergent in your dishwasher for it will loose it’s effectiveness in time. Avoid purchasing no more than a two month supply at a time.

  • Use only a moderate flame on the gas burner of your stove to conserve energy.
  • Cut energy use by 50% to 75% by using a pressure cooker when ever practical.
  • Avoid opening the oven door to check progress, (each time the temperature will drop by 20 to 40 degrees).
  • Covering the oven racks with foil blocks proper hot air flow – (pots and pans should be staggered for the same reason).
  • Take advantage of the oven heat when cleaning – clean your oven right after it’s use.
  • An efficient and fume free flame on your range burner is always blue – if it becomes yellow it will need adjustment.
  • Unless baking breads or pastries preheating your oven is not necessary and a needlessly wasting energy.
  • The efficiency gained from using glass or ceramic pots and pans may allow you to turn down your oven temperature from 20 to 30 degrees.

  • Turn off surface burners and oven burners several minutes before finished cooking to use the stored up heat in the elements to save energy.
  • Keeping stove burners and reflectors clean or replacing the drip pans with quality ones can save 25% to 35% on energy.
  • Use only flat bottom pots and pans that make full contact on the range – rounded bottoms will waste much if not most of the heat.
  • Be certain that all electric coils work properly on your stove, a worn out one could be a wasteful power drain.
  • Try to match the pot or pan to the heating element on your range, a small vessel on a large burner will waste much heat.
