Sub Zero Refrigerator Repair – Chicago & Suburbs

(Sub-Zero repair Chicago)

Sub-Zero refrigerators and freezers are, considered by many to be amongst the finest home refrigerators and freezers available. Likewise they also require the finest in Sub-Zero repair, and we feel as do our many valued customers that Northern Refrigeration not only is and has been for over 45 years now such a firm but that our Sub-Zero repair service is second to none.

Although it may seem counter intuitive to think in terms of repair failure when speaking of a Sub-Zero, Sub-Zero repair will eventually be required, and if you didn’t already know that, your search now and running into our site may indicate that you just found that out.

Through our many years of repair experience we at Northern Refrigeration & Appliance Repair have observed that Sub-Zero repair will not be so much of a reality on a Sub-Zero fridge that has been well maintained compared to one that has not. Those who acquire their Sub-Zero through a contractor, (who are primarily concerned with only the construction and installation end of their job), were not usually explained very much if anything about maintaining their Sub-Zero Refrigerator. The same is also true with those who acquired their Sub-Zero refrigerator though a home purchase, and for the same reason – there again, no ever one explained much about Sub-Zero repair and maintenance to the previous owner either and for the same reason, thus probably not much was passed on you either.

The next time you call us for Sub-Zero repair we will show you how to properly maintain it as recommended and originally intended for the home owner by Sub-Zero themselves, or if more practical you can establish with us a regular maintenance schedule so that we can assist you with the chore, thus cutting your electric and Sub-Zero repair bills in half as well as extending the life of the costly motor/compressor unit.

Even the conventional fridge such as a Maytag, Whirlpool, Kenmore, GE, Frigidaire, Amana etc, should have it’s condenser cleared every 6 months or so, and with the Sub-Zero Refrigerator it is even more critical. There are three reasons for this:

  1. The otherwise extra efficient Sub-Zero condenser design including it’s closely spaced aluminum condenser fins will more rapidly jam up with airborne dust and particulate matter thus causing compressor over heating and inefficient condensing unit operation if maintained beyond the manufactures recommended schedule.
  2. Unlike most other refrigerators, the Sub-Zero refrigerator’s condensing unit is usually mounted up high by the ceiling where it is naturally warmer, thus further exasperating excessive heat buildup when there is a lack of maintenance.

  • Unlike the conventional refrigerator that usually ranges in cost from around $500 to $1,500, a Sub-Zero Refrigerator starting at a “cool” $7,000, will not be nearly as expendable as the lower priced conventional refrigerator thus proper maintenance becomes all the more vital.

Sub Zero Maintenance Tips

Extend the life of your Sub Zero appliances and avoid future problems

Clean Your Sub Zero Refrigerator Condenser.

The condenser coils on your Sub Zero refrigerator is usually located in the front at floor level behind the kick plate grill or at the bottom in the back behind the access panel. Removing the accumulated dust pet hair etc once or twice yearly will help the unit to run cooler for shorter time intervals saving energy as well as extending the life of the compressor. A good strong vacuum with a crevice tool attachment will make a breeze out of the chore once or twice a year.

Replace Sub Zero Refrigerator Water Filter.

Your Sub Zero ice-maker/ water in the door water filter should be replaced every three to six months depending on frequency of use. Once the filter is no longer effectively removing contaminants it will start to release them as water is being drawn. To replace it usually all that is needed is to turn the filter by hand counterclockwise to release it and likewise a 1/4 turn clockwise to install a new one.

Commonly Asked Sub Zero Refrigerator Questions

Q: What is the correct temperature for a Sub Zero refrigerator and freezer?

A: 34°F to 40°F in the refrigerator and 0°F to 5°F in the freezer. Always be sure not to get to close to the freezing point in your Sub Zero refrigerator and much over will begin substantially affect length of preservation. In the freezer, much over 5°F will start to soften ice cream to much.

Q: Could that foul odor I am smelling from my Sub Zero refrigerator be Freon?

A: Because Freon has no actual odor it can not be the Freon that is causing your Sub Zero refrigerator to smell. Also, once there is any sizable Freon leak the refrigerator will stop cooling. Almost always it results from a to high refrigeration temperature and it can act as warning sign that repairs are needed by activating odor causing bacteria that are latent within your fridge.

Q: How long will it take for my Sub Zero to regain its normal cooling level after the repair?

A: It takes 12 to 36 hours depending on factors such as length of off time, how much food was warmed up by the tech leaving the fridge doors open and or putting the food on the counter while servicing etc, but if after 48 hours it has not yet achieved proper temperature in both compartments with normal on and off cycles, do then contact your technician.

Q: What is the correct number to set an older Sub Zero refrigerator?

A: There is no single correct setting, somewhere in the middle would of course come closest to an acceptable choice. The best way to gauge it would be by adjusting the thermostat dial in accordance with a small conventional thermometer in the refrigerator

Q: For how long should my Sub Zero refrigerator run before it turns off?

A. The on off cycling of a Sub Zero refrigerator is based on temperature rather than time intervals so if there isn’t much cooling demand it will turn on and off in longer intervals but if it is perhaps instead loaded with several 6 packs of warm beverages it could run over night to catch up and still be running through the next day, it’s all a matter of demand not time settings.

Q: What could that chemical smell be coming from my Sub Zero refrigerator?

A: Since there is nothing that is a part of a Sub Zero refrigerator gives off a chemical odor, it can and usually is, believe it or not a hidden rotting food item that will create chemicals as part of the decomposition process.

Q: Is thawed out food safe to eat from my Sub Zero refrigerator?

A: If the items from your Sub Zero fridge still have some ice on them it will be OK to refreeze them but if totally thawed then the only option is to either cook it right away or consume it within a day or two.
